Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 23 years in prison after his crimes were exposed

She Said tells the powerful story of two New York Times journalists who uncovered allegations of sexual assault and abuse at the hands of one of Hollywood’s most influential producers – Harvey Weinstein.

Her article, published in October 2017, included testimonies from eight women and actress Ashley Judd, while other celebrities including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Rosanna Arquette shared their experiences the following week.

Directed by Emmy-winner Maria Schrader (Unorthodox), She Said stars Carey Mulligan (Drive) and Zoe Kazan (The Big Sick) as journalists in their first collaboration since 2015’s The Walker.

Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor’s investigations launched what would become the #MeToo movement and resulted in Weinstein being tried for his crimes and sentenced to 23 years in prison.

When is the She Said release date?

She Said will be in UK cinemas on Friday 25th November 2022. It has not yet been confirmed if the film will be available to stream online anywhere.

What is the plot?

Directed by Emmy-winner Maria Schrader (Unorthodox), She Said tells the powerful true story of Twohey and Kantor, two New York Times journalists who investigate and uncover allegations of sexual assault and abuse in Hollywood. They discover that one name in particular stands out, Harvey Weinstein.

They quickly learn that those affected are reluctant to speak up or have signed agreements that prevent them from doing so. As the journalists gather more and more evidence, they soon realize that the only way to uncover these horrific crimes is if everyone speaks out together.

The official synopsis from Universal Pictures reads: “Two-time Oscar nominees Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman, An Education) and Zoe Kazan (The Plot Against America, limited series, The Big Sick) play New York Times reporter Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, who together broke one of the most important stories of a generation — a story that helped fuel the #MeToo movement, shattered decades of silence on sexual assault in Hollywood, and changed American culture forever.”

Universal Pictures released their trailer in the summer. The two-minute clip follows Twohey and Kantor’s journey to uncover the truth behind Hollywood abuse allegations against the powerful film director.

Who stars in She Said?

She Said stars Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan as New York Times journalists as Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor. This isn’t the first time the actresses have worked together, as the couple collaborated in the 2015 television series The Walker. Mulligan is best known for her role as a BAFTA winner in An Education 2009, while Kazan has appeared in The Big Sick, The Deuce, The Plot Against America and Clickbait.

Is the She Said movie based on a true story?

She Said is based on the true story of New York Times reporters Twohey and Kanto investigating allegations against Hollywood producer Weinstein. Her work uncovered a range of allegations and drew media attention to sexual harassment and abuse by high-profile men.

Her revelations inspired the #MeToo movement and provided a safe space for women to share their stories of abuse. It also helped Weinstein’s victims secure justice, with the former multimillionaire being sentenced to 23 years in prison for his crimes in February 2020.

What did Carey Mulligan say about the film?

In an interview with the Guardian, Mulligan and Kazan reflected on the film and its impact. Mulligan said: ‘As a growing woman you’re armed from a young age for something like that; You become aware that you are threatened in certain situations. It’s pretty universal, and I think that’s what people in film connect to: whether someone’s an actor or an assistant, the experiences are so eerily familiar.”

They also addressed the #MeToo movement, adding, “From my lay perspective, I think the #MeToo movement has done just that: It has enabled conversations and opened channels of communication.”
