Netflix’s animated adaptation of popular webcomic Lookism sets a December release date that has been delayed due to the Itaewon tragedy.
lookism has agreed on a new Netflix release date, which comes after the South Korean series’ original date was delayed due to the Itaewon tragedy.
Netflix Anime revealed on its official account that the animated adaptation of lookism will land on Netflix on December 8th. The series, based on the South Korean webcomic of the same name, was originally scheduled to air on November 8, only to be delayed due to the Itaewon tragedy. The incident, which took place on October 29, was a deadly crowd that left 158 dead. As a result, South Korea entered a week-long state mourning. Likewise, on Oct. 31, Studio Mir said it would postpone the Lookism series “until further notice.” The announcement added, “We will notify you of a new streaming date.”
On October 29, an estimated 100,000 people visited Itaewon to celebrate Halloween. This year was the first Halloween that COVID restrictions were lifted. As a commercial district, Itaewon is a popular area for nighttime gatherings and is characterized by its diverse culture and open-mindedness. However, it is also an area known for its narrow streets and alleys. Police were called in the afternoon, warning them that the crowd had grown exponentially and the alley where the deadly crush occurred was completely closed. Callers expressed fear that people could be injured or die.
Hours later, Itaewon was inundated with ambulances, paramedics and bystanders performing CPR on unresponsive partygoers, and police officers scrambling to drag people out of the alley where they fell on each other. 158 people died and 196 people were injured. During the mourning period, shops were closed and television programs were suspended as a mark of respect. An investigation is ongoing, with many blaming the lack of police presence in Itaewon.
The plot of Lookism
Created by Taejun Park, lookism is an ongoing webcomic that began publication in November 2014. lookism has over 600 million views. The story revolves around high school student Park Hyeong-seok, who is a victim of severe bullying because of his unattractive appearance. In the hope of a new life, he moves to Seoul. Instead, Hyeong-seok looks in the mirror one night and finds someone tall, handsome, and athletic staring at him. Somehow, he now has the ability to transition between two bodies: one that fits conventional beauty standards and one that doesn’t. Studio Mir (The Legend of Korra and Dota: Dragonborn) will produce the anime, with K-pop group ATEEZ singing the theme song, “Like That.”
