DOHA, QATAR – November 22, 2022 – At an unprecedented FIFA World Cup this fall – and the first to open on a Sunday in 40 years – Telemundo Deportes’ Spanish-language coverage of host nation Qatar versus Ecuador on Sunday achieved average total audience delivery (TAD). 4.0 million viewers on Telemundo, Peacock and Telemundo Deportes digital platforms, 164% more than in the 2018 opening game. The start of the soccer World Cup also drove Peacock on #1 Free iOS Apps on Sunday and Monday. The 4.0 million viewers for Ecuador’s 2-0 win over Qatar on the opening day of the tournament surpassed Telemundo’s coverage of hosts Russia’s 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia in 2018 (1.54 million viewers TAD) in the first Match of this tournament, which took place on Thursday, June 14th. This year’s World Cup is being held in the fall to counteract Qatar’s extreme summer heat. The game also topped attendances for all but four of the 48 group games in 2018 that featured either Mexico or Brazil.
On the Peacock and Telemundo digital streaming platforms, the match ranked as the most-streamed World Cup match ever in Spanish-language media history with an average viewership (AMA) of 832,000 viewers, representing 21% of the average viewership, a high figure for sports streaming .
Telemundo dominated local markets during the full coverage window (10:30 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. ET) and ranked the #1 network overall in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, Dallas and Phoenix. It was also the #1 Spanish-language network in Chicago, San Francisco, Orlando, Sacramento, Tampa, Philadelphia, Washington, Boston and Atlanta during the game.
Qatar-Ecuador is also the most-watched Sunday morning sports program on Spanish-language television in three years, since the FIFA Women’s World Cup final featuring USA versus Netherlands (7 July 2019). It also ranks 8th among Sunday morning sports programs on Spanish language television (TV only; since 2006).
