Darvin Ham reveals Anthony Davis whiteboarded “Throw The Ball to AD” ahead of the season

Despite LeBron James missing the last two games with an adductor strain, the Los Angeles Lakers have managed to string back-to-back wins.

The Lakers have largely been able to survive without James, in part down to Anthony Davis looking more and more like his superstar self. In their most recent win against the Detroit Pistons, Davis exploded for a season-high 38 points when he got just about anything he wanted.

Head coach Darvin Ham said before the game that Davis made it his mission to be aggressive to re-establish himself as one of the NBA’s best players and revealed a cool pre-season story.

β€œHe’s definitely getting stronger, the back is getting stronger. He’s getting more and more energetic in pushing the issue to the point that he’s that threat, that initial threat. I think he played very, very well. He wants that. It’s funny because he came into my office before the season even started and wrote on my little dry-erase chalkboard, “2022-23: Throw the ball to AD.” That’s what he wrote on the chalkboard, so be we hold him to it.

“He was responding really, really well, doing everything from post-ups to playing pick and rolls to offensive rebounds to get to the line. He’s not paying attention, but he’s hearing some of the chatter out there and he wants to get back to where he is in this discussion of the top 5 best in the league. And he puts in the work to get there.”

Due to injuries, fans and the media have begun to question just how productive Davis can be. So far in the 2022-23 season, Davis has done a good job of calming his critics despite struggling with a nagging back injury.

Against the Pistons, the big man didn’t look sickly because he played with power in the painted area. Detroit had no answers for him, especially in the fourth quarter where he took over offensively and gave Los Angeles a much-needed win.

“It’s great. There’s no better way to improve than being really aggressive on the rim and on the paint, whether it’s post-ups, hard rolling in the pick and roll, offensive rebounding or just coming to paint ride,” Ham said after Davis’ dominating night. “AD was great in the half-roll tonight in the pick-and-roll. They double-teamed him tons whenever he was on the post or whatever was isolated faced him and various double team schemes were thrown at him but he stayed the course and stayed aggressive 21 free throws that’s wonderful and for him to put down 18 of them his presence alone he’s been a great force all year for us and tonight it was no different.”

James should be able to return to the lineup soon, but this version of Davis is just what Purple and Gold need to turn their season around.

Anthony Davis offers insights into a spirited film session

Before their win over the Brooklyn Nets, the Lakers apparently had an emotional filming session, with several players giving their opinions on the team’s problems. Davis provided insight into the conversation, eventually writing it for helping the roster get back on track.
